his own interests and those of his brother, and in con-
cocting schemes of positive injury to the country.
There ought to be no doubt in the matter of a choice in
this and other cases that might be given, and, for the in-
tervats of the country, we sincerely hope there will not
be aay doubt. ‘This is the moral we seek to point—this

Davies by his parhamentary career, and we fail to find
in that any recommvndation for his re-election, As a
speaker and a legislator ho has utterly failed, for he has
never made a speech in Parliament worth remembering,
ior introduced a measure that would entitle him to the
thanks of any class in the community, As a member
ef the Government, his naturally weak intellect
sunecumbed to the more vigorous and active minds of
Messrs, Pope and Haviland, and hence he agreed to the
Canadian proposition of taxing the bread of the poor
man, for the very foolish reason that the Americans
abolished Free Trade,—as if the Canadian proposition
were going to mend matters,—and consented to the
ignoble arrangement which surrendered our Fisheries
without compensation. If our merchants, mechanics,
fishermen, and laboring men think these boons for which
they ought to be thankful to Mr. Davies, of course they
will—even though be himself neither seeks nor wishes
them to do so—vote for him, according to the sugyes-
tio of the Islander ; but if they agree with us that they

have bere indicated would have, been eflveped during the
late Session had not Messrs Laird and Llowate distinctly
declared that their constituents would pot submit to any
change in the Educational system of the Colony which
would involve the imposition of a single penny’s addi-
tional taxation. Hence it was deemed advisable—the
General Election being so near at hand—to defer the
further consideration of the subject until the people
should have an opportunity of expresving an opinion
thereon at the hustings.

The uncommon natural facilities possessed by our Is-
land fishermen being rendered almost nugatory by the
abrogation of the yorito pon Treaty, I will assist in
any measure which may enable our people to compete
successfully with the fishermen of the neighboring Re-

ublic.
