On Friday, the 18th inst., the barn of Mr. Nicholas
Ahearn, Norway, Lot 1, together with its contents, was
destroyed by fire. Some stacks of grain contiguous to
the barn were also burnt. The fire is supposed to have
been caused by a little girl, about five years old, who
was playlug about the premises and somehow applied a
light to one of the stacks of grain, The most of Mr.
Ahearn’s crop was thus destroyed, and is doubtless a
heavy loss to him.

~ NEW PROVISION.

Tirton & MoFantann’s Sares.—If anything can
add to the regret occasioned by heavy losses by fire, it
is the worthleasnees of a safe to whose protection had
been entrusted the most valuable property of the own-
er. There were hundreds of fire-proof safes, so-called
which under the test of the late fire proved to be the
Sheerest shams, much worre than nothing, for. relying
upon their protecting powers. valuables were left in
them which else wonld have been saved. Among the
safes not of that class, but which proved to be honest-
ly made and wonderfully proof against fire, were those
manufactured by Mesars, Tilton & McFarland. Read
the certificates viven of their capacity to resist heat,
As one safe tailed ua, though not subjected to anything
like the heat which some of those withstood succeseful-
ly, we have. afer examination, ordered for our new of-
fice one of this kind, being satisfied that these safes are
what they purport to be—fire proof, under all ordinary
circumstances of exposure,— Portland Argus.

Death or Dr. HamMonp Jounsov.— It is with un-
feigned regret we have to announce the death, after an
illness of three weeks, of Dr. Hammond Johnson. The
Dr. was & coxpparatively young man. Ilis profession-
al services were ever atthe gratuitous service of the
poor. He will be much missed by the community, and
his death deplored at many a fireside.

Our Merchants are busy—‘ head and ears ' into work
putting. in & supply of*fall and winter goods. It is
worth noticing that this year our merchants have not
waited for direct importations from liverpool to Char-
lottetown. Many of theim have had their goods come to
Halifax and thence sent on here. We think that a good
smart steamer to ply between Halifax and here would
prove highly lucrative.

Tur King’s County Exhibition and Cattle Show,
opened in Georgetown yesterday, and will be continued
to-day. Ample arrangements had been made for the

successful carrying out of the affair. In addition to the
Exhibition and! Show there is to be a ploughing-mateh
and horse-races. We expect to be furnished with a list |
of those who have taken prizes, and other particulars
for publication in our next issne,

Mrs. David Walker, of Shediac, eldest daughter of the
Rev. J. Davis, In the 34th year of her age. She ** sleeps
in Jesus.”

On Bay Fortune Road, on Sunday, the 20th September,
after a short illness of 14 days, Mary Ann, the beloved
wife of Kearn Larkin, aged 36 years, She leaves a hus-
band and one child to mourn the irreparable loss of an
affectionate wife and a tender-hearted and loving mother.
She was a good neighbor, and highly esteemed by all her
nequylntences.

We regret to have to announce the death of Mrs,
Loughrin, mother of the Rev. Peter Loughrin, of Clones.
Throughout life she was respected ‘or her many virtues,
and her edifying death was in accordance with that life.
She belonged to that class of fervent, but unostentatious,
Catholics, whose solid piety has done so much for the
promotion of religion, and the fruits of her example and
teaching may be seen in the gifted and beloved clergy-
man who tninisters amongst a flock that idolizes him,
and who is held in the highest esteem by his brother
clergymen in the Dioces afe Clogher.—R.1.P.
