“Tae Halifax Reporter says We learn ‘that the

shore fishery has been very prodactive tha season,
which 18 a great boon to our hardy fishermen on the
coasts. It was feared that the rainy weather of the
Jast month would materially affect the trade, as it was
almost impossible to bring the fish to market, where they
are in active demand, The fine weather of the past few
days will, however, allay these fears,

There is such a marked diference in the cost of trying
and convicting Fenians in Toronto and in Quebeo, that
the Toronto Globe suggests to the Dominion Govern-
ment, that a reasouable reward be offered to the Fenians
to make their arrangements for their next raid, so as to
be caught in tho Province of Quebeo rather than in

, Ontario, as thereby a saving will be effected to the
Dowinion Treasury.

Mar. Geo. W. Mituner, of this city, has invented a
Double Grain Sowing Machine, which promises to be
of great utility to the farmers of this Island. On Thurs-
day last it was tested in a fleld belonging to Mr. Davies.
There was but one slight defect in it, which Mr. Millner

is nowe in remedying. The machine is seven
feet in width, and adjusts itself to the inequalities of
the ground.

A copy of the June number of the ‘New Dominion
Monthly, has been received from the publishers, John
Dougall & Son., Montreal. ‘This uwamber is a very at-
tractive one, being filled with choice literature, both
original and selected. Ita illustrations embrace a lik-
ness of King Theodore, and a representation of Ve-
suvius,

Mrs. Penny, a lady well known in this community,
and at present organist of the army chapel, Quebec. was
presented with a handsome piece of plate by the Catho-
lic soldiers of the 30th Regiment, previous to their de-
parture from that city. The Drum-Major, in presenting
the donation, made a handsome speech, to which Mrs.
Penny replied in fitting terms.

Tne Halifax Reporter, which is always in advance of
ite gor a in procuring news. says that the
Nova Scotia Repeal Delegates left Liverpool, G. B.,
on the (ith instant, on their retun home. Mr. Howe re-
mains behind on private business. The question of
Repeal has been postponed by the Imperial Parliament
for three months,

Atowzo McCormick, a Newark sadidler, aged 24, mar-
dored his wife. aged 18, in Brooklyn recently, by shoot-
ing her through the head with a piste!. He immediate-
ly attempted to kill himself also, by firing a pistol at his
heart, which be barely misssd, #e that he lived some
hours afterward,

Tue wife of Whalen, the supposed assassin of Mr.
McGee, visited hor husband at the jail in Ottawa, a few
days ago. She says she will engage council for her has-
band. The fee demanded by Mr. Hillyard Cameron
was spoken of. She thought even $500 would bea

t deal to pay. She evidently thinks much of Whe-
an.

Burren, last week. was worth from thirty to forty
cents a pound tu Halifax, and scarce at that. Potatoes,
we learm have fallen to thirty-seven cents a bushel. In
the Charlottetown market all sorts of provisions have ex-
perienced a sudden downfall in prices; for details of which
we refer the curlous to market prices, published on
our first page.

Tt is said that Grant is to run, to give prestige to the
ticket, but he is pledged not to qualify for President.
This leaving a vacancy, puts the Vice in, and keeps
Grant where he is, to be at the head of the army for
life. Colfax is really to be the President if the ticket
wing a majority of the electoral college.

By direction of the President of tho United States, a
gold watoh, suitably inscribed, was forwarded in Janu
ary last, to Capt. Michael Carroll, of Windsor, N. 8.,
asan appreciation of his humane services in rescuing
the erew of the American brig Orison, of Portland, Me,
in the fall of 1865.

Thatcher, the New York prophet, says that June will
have more pleasant days than May—a safe prediction,
for it could not well have been less—but that the three
summer months will be showary. Me promises three
pleasant autumn months.

‘Police Magistrate McNab, ef Toronto, delivered a
temperance lecture at London, lately,in which he stated
that ** there were plenty of drunken doctors in Toronto,
bat the lawyers of Hamilton and Toronto were among
the most intewnperate of the community."

Tue English Steamer—nearly a week behind time—
arrived at Halifax at 8 o'clock on Monday evening.
The mail for this Island was forwarded on Tuesday
morning, and was received at the Charlottetown Post
Office at 5 o'clock the same evening.

One of the latest sensations is the offer, for a con-
siderable bet, of a Yankee maniac, who bas acquired a
utation ae a skater, to float down the Falls of Niagara
this summer in an Indiu-rubber boat, which is now
being constructed,

Gaunrattnt'’s Band plays on Hillsborough Square at
seven o'clock every ‘Thursday evening, to an admiring
crowd of both sexes. The Police should be on the
ground to prevent the growing ruffianiem noticeable
among the boys.

The * California fever " has broken out in Nova Scotia.
and nambers of young men are leaving their homes to
seok their fortunes in the ** golden State.” The Halifax
Chronicle recommends them to stay at home, as they
may go further and fare worse.

They are about to try a curious oase in Paris. A
would-be suicide, who had not sufficient courage to
form the futal act, hired a friend to blow out his

Murpny, the Anti-Popery Champion, has excited
further riota at Ashton-under-Lyne and Staley Bridge.

Syrper rifles will be distributed among the best shots
of the Provinces, in order that they niay practise for the
match to come off at Montreal, under the auspices of the

prizes will range as high as $600.

Ir is rumored that there were three attempts at in-
cendiariam in Charlottetown, on Saturday night—one on
the tenement premises of the late Mr. Harris, Pownal
Street, and the other on the premises of Mr. Barnstvad,
baker, Sydney Street.

Tus steamer City of Cork, of the Inman line, with
European mails for Halifax, &c., broke her shaft after
being out some four days from Queenstown, and had to
put back. This will cause a delay of some days in the
Tecelpt of the English Mail for this Island.

Da. Forrester, Principal of the Traro Normal
School, paid our City a visit last week. He has recently
hed isened an Educational work which is highly epoken
of by the press.

It is said that the leaders of the Fenian coaspiracy
determined at the time of the execution of the murder-
ers of the unfortunate Brett, to take the lives of four of
the members of the Royal Family, to * pay for’ the

murder’ of the Fenian ‘ martyrs,’ and that Prince
Alfred is one of the four thus doomed. Intelligence of
this atrocious resolvelwas telegraphed to My. Gaythorne
Hardy by a person who had accidently learned the fact
@ short time after the execution had taken place ; and it
may well be feared that the abominable attempt on the
life of Prince Alfred will not/be the last endeavour of the
miscreants to carry out their diabolical programme.
One must hope that subsequent attacks, if made, will be
frustrated as this one happily has been.

The latest intelligence from Mexico, is that the Gov
ernment of Juarez,the murderer of Maximilian, is tot-
tering to ite fall—that the revolution in favor of General
Ortega is assuming formidable dimensions. It is, how-
ever, almost impossible to believe any reports coming
form that country, for they are proverbially unreliable.
Only a short time since it was announced that the in-
surrection had been almost completely suppressed in
every province where it had existed.

Reverdy Johnston for Minister to England, Mr.
Groesbeck for Secretary of the Treasury, and Stanbery
for Attorney General, are the Cabinet changes talked of
at Washington

Many of our readers will regret to hear that F. P.
Norton, Esq., of Georgetown, died very suddenly on

A Mrerenious Crrcumstancr.—A Quebec paper. speak-
ing of the wreck last fall of the ship “ Woodstock,"’ states
that an inquest was held on Tuesday upon the body of the

WILDERNESS LANDS,

GOVERNMENT ESTATES.

A persons desirous of availing themselves ot the
provisions of the Act for the more epeedy settle-
ment of Wilderness Lands on the Government Es-
tates, are herewith notified that no application for said
land will be entertained until a eurvey is made of the
Lands so to be disposed of, and the froats thereof
staked off; and at certain dates, of which due notice
by advertisement will be given, the Commissioner of
Public Lands will attend at certan places, to receive
applications from those who are rouse of becoming
actual setilers ‘| such lands, (none others need apply),
and if approved of, possession will be given to such ap-
plicants, subject to the provisions of the Act regulating
the settlement of ead Wilderness Lande.
