THE SHELL ON THE SHORE EA VALUABLE FARK FOR SALE! By Valuable Farm for Sale. OR SALE, the FARM owned by Joun Anmstnona, situated in YOUGHAL, in I tiie parish of BATHURST, containing 100 | P. BE IsbAND ‘Steam Navigation Co's Ifead of Holman’s wharf Summe Toile, Sept. 10,'68 68 Thad turned over the wet pebbles and the damp weeds, and sought with naked known as TIOL- feet amongst the waves for some Lright shell or coloured stone to carry home, but I could find none. ‘Tired out, I sat down on a pile of stones to rest, and to watch the waves unroll themselves on the waiting sands. I heeded not the tide, but let it go and come without notice. After a longer interval than I dare tell, considering I was without boots or stock- ings, and my coat damp with the spray of the last tide, I woke up from my| dreaming and renewed my search for a prize, and surely there was a shell glist- ening and gleaming, coloured like sunlit erystal, just dropped from the white tingers of some daring wave, I did not hurry to posscss mysclf of it, but sat still admiring. It was mine, I was sure 1) could reach itany moment with my stick, | an’) who was near on this lonely beach to pick it up ere I could get it! Splash} splash, and up rolled a huge wave, _his- sing and hurrying, rattling the stones, wetting my fect—and the shell, where is it? I looked round, I followed the re- ceding water; dripping sea-grass and/| creamy clots of froth only remained to meet me; the shell—the beautiful shell was gone. Old Nepture had altered his mind and got back his pearl. \ little loss this, but uttering a lofty lesson, never to lose an opportunity of tulkipg every gift of mercy or usefulness the tide of time may bring us ; if unused --neglected—the wave that brought will soon take away, ‘ne Poor Boy.—Do not be ashamed my lad, it you have a patch on your el- bow. It is no mark of disgrace. It ‘aks well for your industrious mother. y our part, we would rather see a dozen atches on your jacket than hear one xp profane or vulgar word escape from your lips. No goud boy will shun you be- cause you cannot dress as well as your companions ; and if a boy sometimes laughs at your appearance, say nothing, my good lad, but work on. We know many rich and good men who were once are poor and upright, vou will be rexpect- ed a great deal more than if you were the son of a rich man, and addicted to bad habits. Love or Music.—Music, if we set aside poetry, is the only art which can at present give delight of great intensity to persons who huve recived but sli, ght artistic education, or that preparation tor artistic enjoyment which comes frum the| study of nature and literature. The} mere recollection of it isa delicious tor-| ture; itis not the rememberance of an object perceived by the senses, but the attempt to revive a state into which our whole emotional nature was thrown ; and though this state, while actually experi-|i enced, scems more entirely passive and trance-like than that produced by any of the other art, music, more powerful than all the rest, awakens the durmant artistic activities in every man, and by some mys- terious dealings with the soul, makes him involuntarily a reproducer. It may be again, or it may be a misfortune, that the master art of the present day should be .ne so purely sensitive and e:notional —one into which, for the listener, so slight an intellectual clement enters. But of the fact there can be little question. What may'come of this in the future it is not easy to conjecture; but it is certain that the source of a noble development of arts is a noble national nature. i The bleakest adversity may bear us to prosperity. ‘The Arctic wanderer may be floated into a warm latitude on an island of ice. A drunkard, upon hearing that the earth was round, said that accounted for his rolling about so much. What your heart thinks is great is great. ‘Ihe soul's emphasis is always right. The talmud—broadway in winter. To prevent a door cracking—Nail it up.
