    Groups Hold

    Joint Meeting

    Home and School Associations
    of Queen Square and Rochford
    Square held a joint meeting at
    Birchwood High School, Novem-
    ber 27th.

    Each school voted $25 to help
    sponsor the Saturday Merry-Go-
    Round radio program conducted
    by Bea Brown.

    Mrs. Charles McQuaid report-
    ed on the semi-annual provincial
    hame and school meeting held at
    Summerside.

    Choral selections were render-
    ed by the Grade VI boys of
    {Queen Square School and.a play-
    ette, “The Green Book” by
    Grade VI girls of Rochford
    Square School.

    Miss Helen Yeo, B.A., M. Ed.,
    supervisor of Teacher Training
    at Prince of Wales College gave
    an instructive address on read-~
    ing. 5
    Miss Yeo discussed the various
    Phases of the reading program
    of today. She said the basic
    reader is the tool which the
    teacher uses to establish the
    abilities for the various purposes
    for which we read. ,

    Miss Yeo spoke of the possible
    dangers which might ensue if
    the reader is consistently carried
    home each day.

    She also referred to the place
    of phonetic analysis as an aid to
    attacking new vocabularly and
    to extensive individual reading
    both assigned and free. The
    child’s free reading is an indica-
    tion of his progress.

    A vote of thanks was extended
    to Miss Yeo. :

    Elects Officers

    Branch “B’’ of the Woman’s
    Auxiliary of St. Paul’s Anglican
    Church held its annual meeting
    Tuesday in the Parish Hall iri
    Charlottetown. After an openin
    hymn the president, Mrs. W.R
    Aitken welcémed those’ present.

    Mrs. J. T.. Ibbott, honorary
    president read the scripture les-
    son, litany and prayers. The
    treasurer’s report was given by
    Miss Caro Ratchford. As pre-
    sident of the branch Mrs. Aitke
    reported on the year’s activities
    She spoke of the expansion o
    the work by the branch and the
    privilege of extended giving.
    Each secretary gave an encour-
    aging report.

    NEW OFFICERS.

    The meeting proceeded with
    the election of officers and Mrs.
    Fred Younker of the nominat-
    ing committee brought in the fol-
    lowing slate of officers: honor-
    ary president, Mrs. J.T. Ibbott;

    Ch‘town Youths
    Get Suspended
    One Year Terms

    Two Douglas Street youths
    were each given one-year sus-
    pended sentences when they ap-
    peared in Charlottetown Police
    Court Tuesday morning charg-
    ed with theft.

    -The two pleaded guilty Mon-
    day morning to the charge which
    arose out of the theft of an auto
    battery and car radio aerial.
    Each was ordered to post peace
    bonds of $300.

    A King Street man, appearing
    for the second straight day in
    court on separate charges of
    being drunk and incapable, was
    sentenced to 10 days in jail.
    Monday he received a fine.

    Holds Meeting

    The regular executive meeting
    of the P.E.I. Chapter, Multiple
    Sclerosis Society was held on

    H.C. Heartz presiding, Corres-
    pondence was read by the cor-
    responding secretary, Mrs. E.S.
    Ohandler, from executive secre-
    tary A.G. Cleland and E. Boyd
    Marsh, honorary treasurer clear-
    ly showed the necessity for more
    funds to be made available for
    research purposes,

    Some details of the national
    advertising campaign were out-
    lined and it was also stated that
    the national office of the Junior
    Chamber of Commerce had given
    this campaign and the financial
    appeal which would follow it’s
    endorsation and active support.

    Definite planning by the local
    chapter will be discussed at the
    next meeting of the executive
    which will be held January 17th.

    Hopes are being held out for
    more interest in the work of the
    society in Prince County where
    several cases have come to the
    attention of the chapter in re-
    cent months.

    Reports submitted to the meet-
    ing included: treasurer’s, Russel
    Arbing, ways and means, Mrs.
    Robert Norton; membership, Mrs
    Stewart MacKay.

    OTTAWA (CP)—The Canadian
    Temperance Federation aired its
    problems before cabinet minis-
    ters Tuesday in what federation
    leaders later termed a satisfac-
    tory hour-long session.

    A delegation from the CTF,
    winding up a two-day meeting
    here, urged the federal govern-
    ment to support financially a na-
    tional alcoholism research organ-
    ization, amend the Criminal Code
    to strengthen existing provisions
    for the use of chemical tests in
    court evidence, and clamp down
    on liquor trade advertising.

    Rev. William Potoroka of Win-
    nipeg told the cabinet group
    headed by acting prime minister
    Green that the conscience and
    coneérn of all Canadians is for
    the study and prevention of alco-
    holism.
    NO CONTROVERSY :
    He said the government would
    find ‘“‘no controversy’ over re-
    search, rehabilitation and pos-
    sibly education on the subject.
    Five provinces had accepted in-
    creasing responsibility for alco-
    hol study, treatment and some re-
    search.
    But federal funds were needed
    to tackle the research job on an
    effective nation-wide basis. —
