    “ASSASSINATION OF T.D, McGEE.

    een,

Yue Journal to-day contains the an-
nouncement of a murder, whic! in all its
circumstances, stamps its author as a
ruffian of the most detestable type. The
Hon Tiromas I’ Arcy McGer,the states-
man, orator, poet, in the prime of life
and full vigor of almost unrivalled talents,
    has been

** Done to death by felon hand,”

at the door of his lodgings at Ottawa,
after having delivered one ot those mar-
yellous utterances in the Ilouse of Com-
    mons ofthe Dominion, which indicated
his claim to the position of the foremost
man among the many able public men
of British America, nay, of the whole
Continent. Tie was shot dead at the hour
    of two o'clock, a. m., on the 7th instant.

Whether we consider the position the
deceased had gained for himself in Cana-
da—the greatness of his natural gifts—
the varicty and extent of his acquire-
    ments—the large and statesmanlike cx-
pansion of his views—the brilliant career
which, in the natural course of events,
might have beenanticipated for his future
—or the cowardly manner of his murder
—ill honest men have cause to weep his
fall, That his honest, outspoken oppo-
sition to the designs of the Fenian organ-
ization has cost him his life, no one
doubts; and, surely, if there be in the
Fenian ranks one honest man, this shock-
ing event, which is but another manifes-

to their sentiments, in words which were
creditable alike to their heads and their

How sad to think that a public man,
