other lady, who protessed tu be a** writing
medium,” pr posed to put her in com-|
munication with the spirit of her departed
husband, to which arrangement she con- |
sented with evident delight. ‘The medium |
prepared herself with paper and pencil, |
and falling quickly into a trance state, |
ealled for the spirit of the late partner of |
the beautiful lady’s joys and sorrows. |
After a brief delay a response was re-
ceivedand theint rview procceded thus |
    —medium down the answers. |
while our railroad friend looked over her
    shoulders :

    Wife—‘*My dear husband, do you
    know me?’

Wifte—How long have you been in
    your present sphere ?

Spirit—Ever since I left the body.

Wife—Do you regret your departure ?

    Spirit—No.

    Wife—Are you happy ?

    Spirit—Yes.

    Wife—Are you happier than when
    you lived with me?

    Spirit—Yes, fur happier.

_ Wife—Where aie you, my husband?

    Spirit —In ‘lephet.

The lady gave a little scream, and the
medium rouse from her trance. It may
perhaps be needless to add that our
friend, who is a bachelor, has postponed

    indefinitely the execution of any inten- |;

tions which he might have for the mom-
ent entertained towards the widow, be-
    cause of her wondrous beauty.

    Two Yankees walking together were
talking of the senses—sccing feeling and
the like. One remarked that his sense
of hearing was remarkable for its acute-
ness, while the other was not wonderfully
endowed in this respect, but observed
that his vision was wonderful, ‘* Now
to illustrate,” said he, ‘1 can see a fly
on the spire of yonder church.” The
other looked sharply atthe place indi-
cated. ‘tAh,” said he, ‘I can't see him,
but I can hear him step!”

An exchange truly says that you may
insert a thousand excellent things in a
newspaper, and never hear a word of ap-
probation from its readers; but just let
a line or two not suited to their taste
slip in (though by aceident,) and you
will be sure to hear of it.’ One of the
greatest difficulties in conducting a news-
payer is to keep it free from objectionable
    matter.

Little deeds, like little seeds, grow to
dowers or to weeds. Never open the
floor to a small vice, lest a great one
should enter. The mill cannot grind
with the water that is past. Man doub-
les his evils by brooding over them.

Tis little troubles that wear the heart
out. Itis easier to throw a bombshella
mile than a feather—even with artillery.
Forty little debts of a dollar each will)
cause you much more trouble and dun-
ning than one big one of a thousand.

Sniveller says that he has been with-
out money so long that his head aches
ready to split when he tries to recollect
how a dollar looks. He says that the
notion that we live in a world of change
    is a great fallacy.

Fear is a prodigious magnifier, espe-
cially where it has been excited by an
unusual object. No traveller cver saw a
small tiger. No landsman ever expe-
rienced a gale at sea that was not a hur-
    ricane,

Enemies are as necessary to the proper! jarge quantities of grain are annually ship-

development of the full-grown man as
friends. When lived that man who
amounted to anything but could count
    his enemies by the score?

Liberty is to the collective body what|
health is to the individual body. With-
out health no pleasure can be tasted by
man; without liberty no happiness can
    be enjoyed by socicty.

If you require a person to assist you,

don't ask the man who promised he|** Shipyard.

would do anything for you when he knew
that you did'nt want anything done.

    Keep doing—always doing. Wishing
    dreaming, intending, murmuring, talking,
sighing and repining, are idle and profit-
    Jess employment.

The repentance that is dvlayed until
old, age is too often a regret for the ina-
    bility to commit more sin.
