    the river rose still higher and the flood ex tended
    along the Lachine railway track and submerged
    the fields in the vicinity of Point St. Charles.
    The flooded streets are covered with rafts and
    boats. $900 have been contributed by the cor-
    poration for the relief of the sufferers.

    To-day the water receded,and at half-past five
    a channel opened in the river, in consequence ef
    whieh the flood sank rapidly.
