“HE REVENUE OF P, B. ISLAND FOR 1867.

Below will be found_a statement of the Revenue for
the financial year ending 31st January, 1863, and a com-
parison of the sources from which it has been derived
for the lust and previous years :—~

    ____ All Sorts of Paragraphs.

    Aa eit ~

Lvtters from the South say that tongue cannot speak
nor pen write the terrible destitution which prevails in
the South. On the Mississippi, from Memphis to Bayou
Sara, the wharves are lined with ragged and tattered
blacks, who lounge away the hungry hours, proud of a
butcher knife, an old pistol or a hatchet in tneir belts,
or a rusty gun over their shoulder. The white popula-
tion arein gloom. ‘They cannot cultivate the land by
the aid of these idle, profligate freedmen, neither bave
they the ee to keep what necessaries of life they may
raise with their own hands from the graep of the thieve-
ish blacks. Their vegetables are stolen Sears they are
ripe, and their animals aud poultry carried off in spite
    of every precaution,

Mr. Goldwin Smith is abont to take up his residonce
in the States, for the purpose of compiling an American
history. In respect to this he says:—‘* I am not going
to seek naturalization in America, cr to cast‘off my
allegiance to my own sovereign and my native land.
I shall be no candidate for citizenship in America, but
that of the Republic of Letters, In the present state
of English affairs I can imagine, though I do not anti-
cipate, the occurrence of a crisis which will render it
incumbent on the honor of every Englishman to share,
though he might be unable to influence, the destinies

From the foregoing figures it will be seen that there is
this year an increase in the amount of revenue received
from Geo'town, Grand River, Rustico, Crapaud, Malpec
and Orwell Bay, while there Is a considerable falling off |
at all the other ports. The receipts from Public Lands
are ÂŁ2,941 12s. Lid. less than they were in 1866, but con- |

The Cleveland Herald says: ‘‘ The Geo. Francis
Train affair resolves itself into this: one passenger on
the Scotia had too long a tongue, atiother too long cars,
‘and the authorities who made the arrest had too long
noses, The one thing needed by all partics concerned
    was common sense.”

The most destructive conflagration ever known in

ceived from Nova Scotia and’ New Brunswick as contri-
butions towards the erection of the North Cape and
East Point Light Houses. The heavy importations of
1866 have, as was foreseen, materially aflected the trade

of 1867, but all things considered, we think the revenue |

of the present, though over ÂŁ17,000 short of that of last
year, is a good one. It exceeds the expenditure by
    nearly £4000,— Patriot, Thursday.

Fatrau Accipest ar rie Car Facrory.— On
Monday afternoon last, about five o'clock, an accident
occurred at the ear fretory, which resulted in the death

    f Alexander MeNeill, a werkinan employed by Mur- | [heir united action is irresistible ; A a ] ;
o ! ' pr) y (heir united action is irresistible; more need not be frectons for the ensuing year, end transacting such

ray, Dougal & Co., aged about 24, and a native of
Prince Edward Island, one of the British North Amer-
    ican Provinces.
substantially as follows: MeoNeill was at work on a car
which was on the side track aud from one end of
which the tracks had been taken out and blocks sub-
stituted to support it. A train backing up strack the
opposite end of the car and throw it over on Mr, Mo-
Neill, crushing him beneath its ponderous weight. He
was taken out as soon as possible, and everything done

for him that could be done, but after lingering along in |

great suffering until Tuesday evening at 9 o'clock, he
died. He was an anmarried man, and had several
comrades here from his native coantry who attended
his faueral, which took place on Wednesday,

Since the above was in type, we have received a note
from Murray, Dougal & Co., in regard to the accident,
from which we extract the following, showing that thé
Dlame attaches to a conductor on the P. & E.R. RR.

Alexander $. MeNeill, with three other men, had a
car jacked up and tho trucks taken from ander it. The
four men were under or about the car making some re-
pairs, when the conductor unlocked our switch, and
without any authority, or giving any notice to any one
connected with the works, backed his train in our
siding, and knocked this car down, injuring MeNeill
ao badly that he died the following evening.

(The above extract (so says the Summerside Progress)
was sent to us for publication, ‘The parties who seut
it cut it from some newsprper, printed somewhere ; but
where, and what its date was, we do not know,
Judging” from the advertisements ou the back of the
slip, the paper was published in Miltén, perhaps Milton,
Manssachusetts, Parties in the habit of cutting out ex-
tracta to seud to papers, should be careful to give the
name, date, and place of publication of the paper it was
taken from. We understand the young man referred
to as having lost his life, wasason of Mr. John Me-
    Neill, formerly of Lot 19,]
