In old times whon smuggling was common in England,
a shoe dealer in London was in the habit of selling boots of
French manufacture at a very much lower price than any

ed by a party of men, who succeeded in carrying away

In old times whon smuggling was common in England,
a shoe dealer in London was in the habit of selling boots of
French manufacture at a very much lower price than any
one else could afford to dispose of them, and yet no one
could bring against him the charge of smuggling, It was long
before the secret was diseovered, but it was found at last
that in each of the high heels of the boots was a cavity con-
taining a watch, which had escaped duty, and he was thus
enabled to sell boots lower than any one else,
St. Marie, the man who betrayed his comrade, Sur-
ratt, has written to the American Government from
Montreal, saying that he gave the information in the
hope of receiving the $25,000 reward which was offered
for the capture of J. I. Surratt, but that he has not yet

fourth year of the reign, of Her Majesty, Queen Vic-
