    SUMMERSIDE J

    SRST oR as i
    Racy Riterature, |
A witty Hiberni nh, just orriged in

London, end wande: about pr recived
@ blanket with the inscription on it: “this
superior blanket for half price’—** just
five chillings.” " By :ny soul and that's
vhape enough!” and so folding the blanket
up, putting it under his arm, he laid down
two shillinge oud sixpence and was walk-
    Ing off. Lhe shopkeeper intercepted
him, and demanded the other two. shil-
lings and sixpence., ‘* Didn't you say
you spalpeen, that the price of the blanket
was five shillings, ayn't I giving you
    half of it? By this and that, I won't}
give up my bargain.” A seufile ensued)
and Pat was taken to Bow street, but
where he pleaded his-ease so well that,
the magistrate dismissed the complaint, |
and advised the shopkeeper never again
to ticket his goods with * half’ price.”

    Frscino.—This is a great country, |
but not fenced in. ‘There are those who,
think it never should be—that it would
    be an absurd outlay. |

    ** In the course of time,” said one man}
lately, ‘± the sea will be the only fence)
    required,,

    * What a bull,” said another, ‘f you
mean that the sea will be the only land-
    mark ?” :

**T Come for the saw, sir.”

    ** What saucer ?””

** Why the saw, siz, that you borrowed.

    **T never saw your sauccr.”’

** But you did; there’s the saw, sir,
    now.”

    **Q, you want the saw.
    you say so?”

    Why didn't

    Far Burween.—Judge Brackenbridge

in reprimanding a criminal, amongst) *

ether hard names, called him a scoundicl. | 5

    The prisoner replied, —
** Sir, Iam not so great a scoundrel as |
    your honour—takes me to be.”
“ Put your words nearer together,” said
    the judge.

    |

Too Latr.—A young lady stepped into |
the store ofa merchant by the name of|
Wade, and very innocently said she
    would like be weighed (Wade.)

‘Really, Lam very sorry,” said he, |
“but my wife will tell you that you are
too late by a couple of years.”

That Calitornia gives birth to a good |
many queer facts, A fricnd informs us,
for instance, that it is impossible to grow
the common turnip in any part of the
    country—the soil being so impregnated
with gold dust that the ‘*yaller strikes
through,” and converts them all into ruta-
    bagas.

    A butcher let a sailor have a shoulder |
of mutton on trust; but finding in a day|
or two after that he had gone to a foreign
    land, said—

“My word! if] had known that he
never intended paying I would have
charged him a penny a pound more for
    itl?

An old sportsman, who at the age of)
eighty-three, was met by a friend riding
very fast was asked what he was in pur-
    suit of?

‘Why’ sir, replied the other ‘* I am
    riding after my eighty-fourth year.”

A May stopping his paper wrote to
the editor, ‘I think folkes ottend spend
their munny for paper my daddy didn’t
and everyboddy sez he wus the most in-
tillygintest man in the cundry and got
the smallest famuly uy buoys that ever
    dugged taters.”

A jndge out West has recently decided
that it might be insanity to sign clea
man’s name to a check in place of your!
own? but when you draw the check, and!
spend it, there is a great deal of sanity in
    the preceeding.

Some boys were recently trying to accr-|
tain to which class of trees the Tree of |
    Knowledge belonged, when one little
fellow gave it as his opinion that it must
    bea birch tree.

    A man was asked what induced him to}
make a law student of his son.

Oh, he was always a lying little cuss, |
and I thought I would humour his leading
    propensity.

    “Young man, do you believe in a}
    future state?”

“In course, I duz, and what's more, 1!
intend to enter it as soon as Betsy gets
    her things ready.”

A dandy being told that he would soon
have to wear a wig, as he was growing
    gray exclaimed indignantly, —

    ‘No, sit I'll dic first.”

A shrowd confectioner has taught his
parrot to say ‘* pretty creature’ to every
lady who enters the shop, and his busi-
    is rapidly increasing.

An Irishman who was troubled with the
toothache determined to have an old offen-
der extracted ; but, there being no dentist
    near, he resolved to do the job himself ;
whereupon he filled the excavation with
powder, but, being afraid to touch it off,
he put aslow match to it, and then ran
to get out of the way.

The following question is now before
    tho Sand Lake Debating Socicty:

“Which do women love best?—to be
hugged in a polka or squeezed ina sleigh. |

    A young man was fined the other day}
twenty dollars for kissing a pretty girl
when she didn’t want him to. It often
costs him ten times as much when they do
    want him to.

A Yankee has just taught ducks to
swim in hot water with such success that
    thoy lay boiled eggs. :

    SOOTHING SYRUP,

    FOR CHILDREN TEETHING,

    SURE TO REGULATE THE BOWEL

Depend upon it, mothers, it will give rest
    to yourselves, and

Relief and Health to your Infants,

We have put up and sold this article for
over thirly years, and can say, in vontidence
and truth of it, what we have never been able
to say of any other medicine—never has it
failed ina single instance, to effect a cure,
when timely used, Never did we know an in-
stance oi dissatisfaction by any one who used
it, On the contrary, all are delighted with its
operations, and speak in terms of highest com-
mer ion of its magical eflects and medical
virtues, We speak in this manner “ what we
Jo know,” after thirty yours’ experience, and
Pledge our reputation’ for the fulfilment of
what we here declare, In almost every in-
stance where the infant is suffering from pain
and exhaustion, relief will be found in fifteen
or ay minutes after the syrup is adminis-
    tered,

‘This valuable preparation is the prescrip-
tions of onc of the most experienced and skil-
ful nurses in New England, and has been Us-
ed with never tailing success in thousands of
cases: It not only relieves the shild trom
pain but invigorates the stomach and bowels,
corrects acidity, and gives tone and energy to
the whole system. It will almost instantly
relieve GRIPING IN THE BOWELS, AND
    WIND COLIC, and overcome convulsions,
which, if not speedily remedied, end in death.
We helieve it the lest and surest remedy tn
the world, inall cases of Dysentry and Diarrhasa
in Children, whether it arises from teething.
or from any other cause. We would say to
every mother who has a child suffering from
any of the foregoing complaints—do not let
your prejudices, nor the prejudices of others,
stand between your suffering child and the re-
lief that will be sure—yes, adsolutely sure—to

    Messrs. Rocrns & Co, :—

Gentlemen—For the sake of those who are
suffering with Scrofula or King’s Evil, 1 wish
you to publish the following facts: About
cight years ago. a swelling appeared under my
ching ina short tine it uleerated, and became
aw running sore, and extended across my neck
from ear to ear ‘The bone became affected
and several pieces cume out from time to
time. ‘The smell trom the parts affected he-
came very offensive, so much so that I had to
retire by myself and dress them, TI tried the
best doctors in the country, and niany in the
United State, but all to no purpose. 1 also
    tried various patent medicines, including
Lvennedy’s Discovery, which I used for two
years, butit did me no good. Under your
treatment my general health which was very
much impaired, is completely restored, and
the Serofula on my neck is entirely healed up,
Tam a sound man now, thanks to Providence
for his goodness. Let no one who reads this
doubt its truth. Hundreds know my case.

    Amurrst, October Ist, 186)

Gentlemen—I have been a great deal tron-
bled with those merciless and most distressing
things called Felons, or Whitlows. Last year
I was laid up three months with one, and I
could not tell what I suffered. A few weeks
ago another begun with all its usual vigor and
earnestness. I suffered for several days. My
hand swelled very much, and I looked for-
ward to three months more of misery and
suffering; but happily I tried your Ointment.
In two days I went to work. It seemed to
kill itat once. In three or four days, a hard
black lump came out at the end of my thumb.
