    DEATH OF LORD CANNING.

In the death of Lord Canning, England loses one
of her most serviceable statesmen. He was the son
of the eclebrated George Canning, for some time
Vrime Minisier of Great Britain, and was born in
1812, being, therefore, but fifty ponte old at the time
of his death. We was edueated at Oxford, where
he showed the evidences of unusual talent. He en-|
tered Parfiament in 1836, and took office im the ca-
binet of Sir Robert Peel m i841. In 1852he became
Postmaster General, and for three years conducted
that departiaent with signal energy and efficiency,
making many reforms, and giving a new impetus to
the whole business of that “engine of promoting the
happiness of the people,’ as he believed it to be.
