Poo Bad=Mied Betsy Peurl is *' fair,

fortable living by Keeping & small shop

wity: She is a spruce old woman, aud

‘One evening # customer called for a glace
ofthe beverage, inquiring at the same
time if it wae new made beet.

    * No excldimed a waggish bystander,
just a’ vhe was about to apply in the
affirmative, “1 can assure you it is old
    maid beer.”

The wag waa seen putes to leave
the lady's premises with a glass flying
    after him,

    Hoasa Traps.—When Colfax was a
rong man, he and a judge once got to

    antering one another about trading

horses, and it wae agreed that the next
morning at nine o'clock they should make
@ trade, the horses to be unseen up to that
hour, and no backing out under a forfeit.
ure of twenty-tive dollars, At the hour
appointed, the judge came up leading the
sorelest-looking specinien of a horse ever
seen in those parts, In a few minutes
Mr. Colfax was seen approaching with a
    Wooden snww-horse on his shoulders.
Great were the shouts and the laughter
of the crowd, and both were greatly in-
creased when Mr, Colfax on surveying the
Judge's animal, set down his suw-horse
and exclaimed—' Well, judge, this is the
first time I ever got the worst of it ina
    horse trade.”

Near the village of M——there lived
a farmer, who had engaged a son of the
Bmerald Isle to work for him, One morn-
ing in the spring Vat was sent to harrow
a piece of ground, He had not worked
long before all the teeth—except three—
came out of the harrow. After a while
the farmer came out in the field to see
how Pat proceeded, and asked him how
    he liked harrowing.

**Oh,” replied Pat, ‘*it goes a bit
smoother now since the pegs are out.”

A Physician going down State street
with a friend of his, said to him:

‘+ Let us avoid that pretty little woman
you see there on the left; she knows me
and casts on me a look of indignation.
    I attended her husband—”

    * Ah! I understand; you have had the
    misfortune to despatch him.”

** Onthe contrary,” replied the Doctor,
    “1 saved him.”

Said a youngster, in high glee, display-
ing his purchase to a bosom friend on the
sidewalk : * ‘'wo cocoanuts for ten cents !
    that'll make me sick to-morrow, and I
won't have to go io school.,

    Lurrrem Down Easrer.—A pious
old negro, saying grace at a table, not

    complichment of most important useful-
    neas |

It ia much easier to think right with-
out doing right, und to do right witheut
thinking tight, Just thoughts may, and
    often do, fail of producing just deeds;
but just deeds are sure to beget just
    thoughts.

That Godealls, it 4s His meray 5 that
    thou come at His call, it is his mercy;

that thou dost labor, when thou art come,
lit is His mercy; and thou art tewarded
    |for thy labor, it is His merey.

With mont of us, idleness is the parent
not merely of uncasinews, but withal of
    {retfulneas, malevolence and the whole
host of evil passions, ‘The phrase ‘ach.
ing void,’ may be ridiculous to those who
criticise grammatically, but is true to
those who feel humanly. ‘To wupply this
void is an object, and moreover a certain
effect of a regular and sustained and judi-
    cious method of self-instruction, ‘The
used key is bright, If the steel be
wrought up and refined to a high temper,
the cloudiness of the vapor will perish
fromitalmost at the ‘instant that it is
    breathed upon it.

    A single enow-flake—who cares for it ?
But » whole day of snow-flakes, cbiiter-
ating the landmarks, drifting over the
doors, gathering on the mountain to crush
in avalanches—who does not care for
that? Private opinion is weak, but pub-
    lic opinion is almost omnipotent.

    Dury.—No man’s spirits were ever
hurt by doing his duty; on the contrary,
one good action, one temptution resist-
ed and overcome, one sacrifice of desire
or interest, ptrely for conscience sake,
will prove a cordial for weak and low
spirits, far beyond what either indulgence,
or company can do for them.

Is there one minister in ten that dare
tell his congregation what he personally
thinks of their present condition? Again,
does that minister expect any better fate
    than his congregration ?

“ Mangling done here,” is a sign
known to very many, and we fear that in
many of our churches the above words
written over the pulpit would not be out
of place, from the fact that the whole truth
    is not brought forth, ;

Some do first, think afterwards, and re-
    pent forever.

Are my wife and my children eating
food and wearing clothing got by lies
told by me in my business, day after day ?
When I sit down to my table, does it
ever occur to me that all these ‘fat
things ” are the preparations of money
that I and my clerks lied for? Do I ever
think that the rich man opened his eyes
in hell, and that I may one day be doing
    likewise.

The Journal is the best advertising
    medium onthe Island.

only used to ask a blessing upon his
board but he would also petition to have
    some deficient dish supplied.

One day it was known that Cato was
out of potatoes, and suspecting that he
would pray for some at dinner, a wag

_ providing himself with a small measure

of the vegetables, stole under the win-
dow next which stood the table of our
colored Christian. Soon Cato drew upa
    chair and commenced:—

‘©O, massa Lord willdow in dy pro-
vident kindness condesend to bress ebery
thing before us and be pleased to bestow
upon us 4 few taters—and all the praise.”

(Here the potatoes were dashed upon
the table breaking plates and upsetting
    the mustard pot.)

** Dem’'s em, Lord,” said Cato look-
ing with surprise; ‘only just luff em
down a little easier next time.”

-* Ah, Mr. Simpkins, we have not chairs
enough for company, said a gay wife to
her frugal lord. ‘ Plenty of chairs, mad-
am.’ he replied‘ ‘ but tou much compan;.’

‘**T say, boy, is that the fire?” asked
a gentleman of a ragged urchin, and
pointing to a dense volume of smoke
that was issuing from the windows of a
warehouse. ‘* No, sir, that is only the
    smoke,” replied the boy.

other day for his embarrassment. ‘ Oh,
