The flarmer of today lives by
means of farm profits. The de-
sire for profits should lead farm-

ers to carry out improved farm |

practices to the end that they
    may better maximize their ob-

    -|jectives through the efficient use
of their farm resources. This in-

    volves farm management which

‘}can be thought of as the opera-

tion and organization of the farm
from the point of view of effi-
    ciency and continuous profits.
    Farm management is concerned
with the business aspects of farm
ing and the problems of the in-
    dividual farm.

    The business and home aspects
of the farm are very closely ¢or-
related. The profits of the busi-
ness are used for family living.
    By better planning and manage-
ment the farm business is able to
provide for a better farm living.

On carrying out the farm man-
    agement process, the farmer per-
    forms five functions. He must
    recognize a problem, collect re-
    levant information, make a de-
    cision, take action and accept

‘| Pesponsibility for the action. A

    problem is recognized whenever

    | the farm manager feels discon-

tent with the organization and op-
    eration of the farm considering
    the goals and accomplishments of
the farm family. If it is felt
that a. change will improve the
situation, the next step in the
    management process would be
    to procure all information per-

‘taining to the problem. There a

decision will have to be made as
to what means will be adopted in
    solving the problem. Naturally
    there will be alternative produc-
    tion techniques and practices.

    associated with a problem. Pro-
fit received is. the payment for
    risk involved.

Each farm unit is unique. Each
has its own goals and objectives
as well as its own resources. The
    farm management process will
then have to deal with the indi-
    vidual farm. Although the man-
    agement processes are the same
a differnt type of management is
    necessary for each farm. Each
will have to appraise its situa-
tion and decide what farm prac-
    tices will be adopted.

    However, on évery farm, basic
    economic principles must be used
    to determine how resources can
    be used most efficiently. These
are (1) add additional units of a
resource as long as the value of
    the additional output is greater
    than or equal to the added cost;
    (2) substitute one factor for ano-
ther as long as the cost of the

factor added is less than or equal

to the factor replaced; (3) sub-
    stitute one product for another
product as long as the value of
    the added product is greater
than or equal to the value of
    the product which is replaced.

    The fixed resources provide the
limit to the possible plans for
any farm and provide the basis
    upon which variable resources
can be added. The vamriable re-
sources which willl be added will
depend upon their cost and their
influence on the farm plan. Then
    another principle may be added
—use each resource where it will
    give the greater return.

    The Agricultural Stabilization

‘Board agreed, as of July 3rd,

    1958, to purchase potatoes from
the 1957 crop still on hand in
    P.E.I. Payment was limited to
    36 cents per bushel. :

    Prices received during 1958 and
1959 for the Canadian potato crop
    will be influenced strongly by
the size of the crop in the Uni-
ted States. In that country the
fall crop is estimated at one
    hundred and seventy-seven mil-
    lion hundred weights, 12 per-
cent more than last and 16 per-
    cent more than 1947-56 average.
The total output in the United
    dred and forty-eight million hun-
    dred weights. 7 percent more
    than last year’s crop. 2

    The 1958-58 quota for Canadian
seed potatoes to be imported into
    the United States—Canada’s prin-
    ciple market—remains the same
as last year, that is, 1.1 million
    hundred weight. The quantity of
    seed potatoes under contract with
    countries other than the United
States will likely be smaller in
1958 than the six hundred thous-
    and hundred weight contracted
    for in 1957.

During 1957-58, of the 2.1 six

ten (10) gallons of fuel oil is the
    recommende2 application per
acre. Fuel oil must be used as a
carrier because it stays on t!
    bark longer than water result-
    ing in greater penetrations and
    because it doesn’t freeze during
    winter .This may prove slightly
higher in cost than water, but
    the decided advantages would
    seem to outweigh the price.
    Thoroughly spray plants with
