    SIDE JOURNAL, THURSDAY, FEBRUA

    Sitvr

A Scotch preacher being sent to offici
ate ene Sunday ut a country parish, was
accommodated at night in the munse,in 4
very diminutive closet, instead of tlie
    usual best bed-room appropriated to
strangers. ‘Is this the bed-room ?’ he
said, starting back in amazement. * Deed,
ay, sir, this is the prophet’s chamber.’ * It
maun be for the minor prophets, then,’
    was the reply,

    Scorcir Turotocy.—The Advance
quotes a shrewd Scotchman as saying, |
    * You never saw a woman sewing with-
out a needle! She would muke but poor
speed ifshe only sewed wi’ the thread.
So, I think, when we are dealing with sin-
    ners we maun aye put in the needle o the}
law first; for the fact is, they’re sleepin’
sound, and they need to be awakened up
wi’ something sharp. But when we've
got the needle o' the law fairly in, we
may draw as lang a thread as you like o'
    Gospel consolation aftcr it,’

A coffin maker was asked whom he was
making for, and mentioned the intend-
ed. * Why, he is not dead, man!’ said the
querist. * Don’t you trouble yourself,’ re-
plied the other; ‘Dr, Coe told us to
make the coffin, and 1 guess he knows
    what he gave Lim.’

What is the difference between a fast
    man in debt and a feather bed? One is}
hard up and the other is soft down.

A drunkard, upon hearing that the earth
wesround, suid that accounted fur his|
    rolling about so much.

A marriage Ticcnse issued at Washing- |

ton was returned with the endorsement,
    ‘She wouln’t have me.’
Young men are too apt to think them-

    selves wise enough, so drunken men are}
apt to think themselves sober enough. |

    Tux Sroxen Worp.—Boys and girls,
what iv it you can never catch, though
you chase after it as op the wings of the
wind? You cannever catch the word
that has once gone out of yourlips. Once
spoken, it is out of your reach do your
best, you can never recallit, ‘Therefore,
tuke care what you say. Neverspeakan
unkind word, an impure word, a lying
    word, or a profane word.

‘© My son, would you suppose that the
Lord’s prayer could be engraved ona
space no longer than the area of a cent?

‘Weill, yes, father, ifa cent is as big
in everybody's eyes as it is in yours, 1
think there would be no difficulty in
putting it on about four times.

There is this difference between these
    two temporal blessings, health andmoney;
money is the most envied, but the least
enjoyed; health is most enjoyed, but the
least envied; and this superiority of the
latter is still more obvious, when we re-
flect that the poorest man would not part
with health for money, but that the rich-
est would gladly part with all their
    moncy for health.

If you think your opportunities are not
god enough you had better try to im-
    prove them.

Old boys have their playthings as well
as young ones—the difference is only in
    the price

    Aguiculture.

    ESE EEN SS

Farmers sell too many of their beef
cattle when they ure merely in ordinary
beef condition. In doing this there is a
two-fuld loss that but few consider, ‘The
animal yields a less number ot pounds
and the meat brings a lower price, Be-
tween ordinary beef and really ckoice, fat
beef, there is always a difference of two
or three cents per pound, and this differ. |
ence when added to the whole number of |
pounds when the animal is in the best
condition, will be found to be no mean
    amount.—Nothing pays better than the
few bushcls of grain or the few days upon
yood June pruss, that puts the * finish-
ing touch’ upon what is generally denomi-
    nated a good beef animal.

    |

Icy Paths.--Severe falls may be pre-|
vented by sprinkling the slippery pi
about the house and yard with cou! uses,
sand, or sawdust. ‘The last is the most
cleanly, and is casily obtained at saw-
mills in the country, as well as in large
    towns.

    Tce Houses.~We wonder that ice-houses
are so rarely found upon the farmer
premises. ‘They can be built of materi:
found upon the farm in a very cheap, sub-
stantial way, and would save many times
the interest of the money invested every
year, Buy a few nails, get boards and
joists from your wood lot, and try your
hand at an ice-house, filling the sides
    with sawdust or planing-mill shavings.
If the ice-house is ready, fill it as soon
as you have ice six inches thick. The|
first ice furmed is quite sure to be clear
und solid, and is often the best of the sea-
    son.

    Manures.—Keep all the sources of
supply, the yards, stics, and privies, well
    supplied with absorbents. The yreat
error in all our farming is the neglect of
the manure heap. Study constantly to
increase this as the grand secret of suc-
cess in farming. Keep your animals all
stabled, or in close sheds, that all the
manure may be daily thrown into heaps,
and mingled with muck end other absorb-
ents. Keep the manure under cover, if
possible, and if not, compost it in heaps.
From the manure of fowls, and night soil,
an excellent fertilizer may be prepared
for hills and drills, Almost all crops are
    benefitted by these applications.

Swine should have dry, warm stics,
    with well-littered yards. Breeding sows
should be kept in good flesh, and as they |
approach the time of farrowing, each |
sow should have a pen by herself, witha
plenty of clean straw. Swine should be
fed generously, and kept growing. ‘There
is no profit in half feeding animals.

    Horsrs—Lxamine the shoes frequent-
ly and sce that they are kept sharp. ‘The
best smvoth-shod animal is almost help-
less on the ice. Horses do better with-
