Great was the astonishment and yoluble
the indignation of the Frenchman when
finally made to understand that the rustic

ugly rural implement, But he sturdily
stood his ground,

remaiued was, what was to be done with
the carcase? He was loth to leave it
where it was; beaides, he wanted its skin
âas what victorious sportsman does not ?â
and, above all, he wished to show Mrs.
Barclay how easily such seeming monsters
could be killed. Not unaturally, then,
though in an evil hour, he deteriined to
drag it home, For this purpose he undid

Over and Over Again,
Over and over again,

Some lesson I have to learn,

T must grind out the golden grain,
T must work at my task with a resolute will.

That run through a single hour.
But the morning dews must full,
And the sun and the summer rain
Must do their part, and perform itall
Over and over again,
in i The perplexed captain then dropped
down to w little fricudly remonstrauce ;
saying, very blandly :
** Pardon, monsieur, you know not de

And now let's to work! Timin suthinâ ot

So they took their positions,
âOne! twol! three!!!"âat it they
went! âThe Frenchman made a signiticaut
stroke, aimed at the weak poiut in his ad-

back for anew demonstration, âChen the
carease was dragged, Ashe advanced,
with the huge reptile trailing at his heels,
some evil genius putit into his head that
now was a fine opportunity to give Mrs.
Barelay a lesson that would cure her of
her fear of serpents, His simple plan of
mischief was soon laid. Ile determined
totake the serpent into the house, and coil
it in the sitting-room in such a manner as
that its wounded parts could easily be hid-
den. He draggedit, therefore, with some
trouble along the verandah, and soon
managed to coil away its great folds in
suclia manner that its injuries were hidden
and it looked as it alive. When all had
been arranged, he went and called his
wile, who, us is the custom of the country,
was sleeping out the great heat ot the day
in her own room, Little suspecting what
was to follow, she came at once, and the
instant she entered the sitting-room Mr.
Barelay slipped out and fastened the door
behind her, What passed alterwards can
only be guessed with horror, Ler screams
of * The serpent, the serpent!â were at
first so shrill and loud as to quite drown
atthe end of year 9s.

mischief was soon laid. Ile determined
totake the serpent into the house, and coil
it in the sitting-room in such a manner as
that its wounded parts could easily be hid-
den. He draggedit, therefore, with some
trouble along the verandah, and soon
managed to coil away its great folds in
suclia manner that its injuries were hidden
and it looked as it alive. When all had
been arranged, he went and called his
wile, who, us is the custom of the country,
was sleeping out the great heat ot the day
in her own room, Little suspecting what
was to follow, she came at once, and the
instant she entered the sitting-room Mr.
