    4,

    - tice and Mr. Justice Peters presiding.

accounts for what we have heard of the
    defective discipline maintained in the
    College.

    A Charlottetown Hotel Company has

applicd for incorporation, We are glad
to learn the new Hotel is to be built on
something more substantial than an airy
    foundation.

The hon, Mr. Haviland has introduced
a bill permitting the officers of the law
to take in execution gold and silver coins,

    ‘Treasury Warrants, Debentures, Notes |

and Bank Notes. Itseems that in the
present state of the law a debtor can have
his pockets and his drawers full of cash
and valuable securities, and yet laugh at
the Constable and his creditor. We for
our part do not see why such valuable pro-
perty isnot quite as liable to seizure as
tables, grain, stock, hay and straw. The

poor honest man who has a little of such |
property about him can be stripped of

the whole of it by his creditors, but the
rich scoundrel who manages to elude the
vigilance of the Sheriff may walk off with
thousands of pounds of Treasury Warrants
and bank notes, or if he is caught and
clapped in jail, he can, while he lives like
a prince, keep his creditors an indefinite
time out of their money. Our plan
would be to make everything that a man
owns except the barest necessaries liable
to seizure, and abolish that hateful relic
    of barbarism—imprisonment for debt.
Mr. Haviland’s Bill also exempts from
    seizure the necessary wearing apparel
and bedding of the debtor and his family,
the tools and implements of his calling,
and his last cow. This is only what
    common sense and common humanity
    require. Some privileges that have
hitherto been accorded to Attornies are
abolished and some reform in the practice
of the Courts of Law made.

On Sunday evening last the Rev. Dr,
Ritchie, who is about leaving the Island,

reached a farewell sermon before a large

ody of people, in the Wesleyan Church,
Charlottetown, The Dr, sted for his
text those appropriate words in Phil, 1: 2
We have seldom, it ever, had the pl
of listening to a more able discourse, At
the close of his sermon he addressed the
young of the congregation, warning them
to avoid Sabbath desecration, which, he
said, led to all other kinds of sin and
erime. He carries with him, we believe,
the good will of the large body of Chris-
tians over whom he has presided for the
    past three yeirs.

Tur ‘Eastern Chronicle” says Oats are
now selllng for 50 and 54 cents, and P. Ei,
Island potatoes for 60 cents a bushel,

te The House of Assembly was proro-
    gued on WednesÂą

    day.
ta We learn that the railroad between
Pictou and Truro, which is now completed,

will be open tor public traflie in a few

days. This will enable persons traveling
to leave Charlottetown in the morning
and arrive in Halifax the same evening.

te As we have to lay in a new supply
of paper and other material, and as it re-
quires a large sum of money to do tl
we must make a call on all delinquent
subscribers, as well as tose indebted to
    us otherwise,

te” The Temperance Tull in Freder-
icton was burnt to the ground on the night
of the 8rd instant, with all its contents.

ta On Sunday last the Rey. George
Sutherland preached his farewell sermon in
the Prince Street Free Church. ‘The Rey.
gentleman leaves the Islind in a few days.

    hg Tue fishing schooner Summerside,
which was disposed of at public auction, on
‘Tuesd t, was pu ed by Charles Green
and R. Lf, Holman, Wsgrs., for the sum of
    ÂŁ11,00.

pa Active preparations are being made
in Charlottetown to erect new buildings on
many of the sites of the burnt district.

Horse races are advertised to come
offin St. John N.B., on the 24th May, to
which horses from this Island will be admitted.

pa Tur Steamer Commerce arrived in
Charlottetown on Sunday last, from Boston.

    Supreme Cournt.—The
Court, for Queen’s County, commenced on
Tuesday last—their Lordships the Chief Jus-
    The
record contained seven summary and thirteen
appeal cases, wll of which have been disposed
    of.—Lx.

We very much regret to learn that the long!

and very severe winter has caused consider-
able distress in the country districts ; and what
is worse, a great many of our industrious fiu-
mers, especialy amongst those in King’
County, will find it utterly impossible to pro-
cure seed for the now coming planting sea-
    son.—£x.

The Screw Steamer ‘ Gulnare,” Captain |

McLeod, master, arrived at this port on Sa-
turday morning, the 11th inst.,from Glasgow,
via St. Joha’s. Newfoundland, which latter
port she reached after an excellent qussage of
eleven days. ‘The *Gulnare” is owned by a
company consisting of some of our most en-
terprising and active citizens. She w mnilt
at the order and under the inspection of Capt.
McLeod, by Charles Connell & Co., who hold
the first rank among British Shipbuilders.
She is what is termed ‘* composite,” i.e., con-
sisting of a teak planking upon an iron frame-
work, and what may be deemed the best eer-
tificate of merit, is the fact that she hus
±lassed for 14 years, A.1. at Lloyds .—Pat.

Ihave been afflicted with a very trouble-
some humourin my face for six years and
have tried many perscriptions to little or no
avail; but having heard of J. B.Flitch’s Gol-
deu Ointment [ was induced to try a box, by
the use of which I am cured ; and believe it
my duty to recommend it to the public.
