2) THE HERA

A zeapixa New York paper states that all the reports
about negotiations between Mr. Seward and Mr. Thornton, |
concerning # new Iteqiprocity Treaty, haÂąd noâ foundation in
fact. The subject has wot been âbroached at âall, nor âis there
any likelihood that it will be, It 1s somewhat singular that
these reports about a âTreaty to apply to all these Proviyces
did not originate until Gen, Butler had started on his way to
this colonyto promote a special ariangement with reference to
the fisheries, ete. We donot think it would require a great
stretch of imagination to saddle the reports on their right auth-
ors; butif theiv object had been to make the people and Govern-
ment indifferent to Mr. Butlorâs mission, they signally failed.
It must be now evident that if Princo Edward Island has to
wait fora renewal of Reciprocity until the Dominion of
Canada brings about so. desirable an end, we are afraid she
will have to wait a longtime. Her only hope evidently is
in the successful prosecution of those negotiations so auspi-
ciously inaugurated by the Congressional Comittee. For
our part we cannot see) why Confederates. should gloat, as
they are doing, over the prospect of the defeat of the nego-
tintionsy why lying * reportsâ should be circulated about
a general Reciprocity Treaty ; andâ âwhy the Congressional
âCommittee should have their motives impugned, when a few
months at furthest will test their sincerity, and prove whether
âa special atrapgement can be made with;this colony: or not
There has been nothing too low or mean for the Confeder-
ates to vent their ill-favor on the proposition ever since it
originated in âthe United States House ot Representatives.
âThe people do not forget theseâ things, and will remember
in the future those gentlemenâLiberal and Conservativeâ
who have striven to secure for them the most remunerative
market in the world for ther syrplus productions. , OhJ yes;
the people will remember at the proper time the contrast be-
tween those who hailed with delight the prospect of a re-
newal of a partial reciprocity, and who are using their best
exertions to obtain it; and those who scowled upon it when
the prospect was bfight ; and laughed with denidnical glee
when it promised to end in nothing. If there is no reason
or argument in what the advocates of the new arrangement
say, there is much less in its opponents. They are opposed
to it on the pure and simple ground that they are Confeder-
ates, and its success would ensure our freedom againat the |
Dominton. The fact may speak well for their consistency,
but notfor their honesty to their native or adopted land.
Hereafter, if we have not already received the lesson, we
shall come to learn that itis only what is positively injur- |
ious to our interests as a people, that the Dominion would
be willing for us to secure, We shall also learn from the
cunning and lyfng â reportsâ which were seattered by the
telegraph just as the Congressional Committee had reached
our shores, how cautious we should be in dealing with the
enemy ; for we must confess that upon reading about that
tume that Secretary Seward and Minister Thornton were tak-
ing up the question of Reciprocity, so as to apply to the whole
ofthe British North Ameriean Provinces, we were disposed to
feel indifferent as to the mission of the Congressfonal Com-
mittee. Had such a fecling been allowed to find root in the
Executive of the colony, in the principal gentlemen of the
city. and throughout the country generally, Gen, Butler
and his friends, instead of departing from us as they did with
the most kindly feelings, would have carried away with
them such a poor opinion as to blot out all chanee of any
arrangement mutually beneficial, Canada may be as en-
vious as she pleases, and Net sateliites mar! endeavor to be-
little this Congressional Committee, but chey cannot shut
their eyes to the fact that an honor has becn done to this
_pmall colony rarely accorded to the most powerfal nations in
the world. We are full of hope that the negotiations going

One of the. most stupidly ignorant newspaper articles
we have ever reall, appeared recently in the colamns of
the Boston Commercial Bulletin on Gen. Batlerâs pro-
positions. Cétisidering that tho Bulletin pretends to
instrnot the merchants of Boston in matters of trade, we
are simply amazed at it. The writer knows nothingâ
er wo nothingâof bis subject, and as might natar-
ally béexpected, he becomes enveloped ine fog Which
miay be described as impenetrable.

utiful art. We ere pleased to observo that he lias

2) THE HERA
a ee AS
A zeapixa New York paper states that all the reports
about negotiations between Mr.
For
our part we cannot see) why Confederates. should gloat, as
they are doing, over the prospect of the defeat of the nego-
tintionsy why lying * reportsâ should be circulated about
a general Reciprocity Treaty ; andâ âwhy the Congressional
âCommittee should have their motives impugned, when a few
months at furthest will test their sincerity, and prove whether
âa special atrapgement can be made with;this colony: or not
There has been nothing too low or mean for the Confeder-
ates to vent their ill-favor on the proposition ever since it
originated in âthe United States House ot Representatives.
âThe people do not forget theseâ things, and will remember
in the future those gentlemenâLiberal and Conservativeâ
who have striven to secure for them the most remunerative
market in the world for ther syrplus productions. , OhJ yes;
the people will remember at the proper time the contrast be-
tween those who hailed with delight the prospect of a re-
newal of a partial reciprocity, and who are using their best
exertions to obtain it; and those who scowled upon it when
the prospect was bfight ; and laughed with denidnical glee
when it promised to end in nothing.
