than many are: disposed to ulmit; but
we are aware that there are some who
thi k that sufficient attention is not given
to this branch of industry, and who wate
legislative actions on the fisheries with
a great deal ef interest; all such will cor-
dially approve of the action of the House
of Commons at Ottawa, in levying a
license duty of two dollars a ton upon
American fishing vessels, which is to be
expended in bounties to their own fisher-
men; an act which would have been
worthy the adoption of our own Goyvern-
ment and Legislature. Had the Domin-
jon Government raised the duty to six
dollars a ton, they would have been per-
fectly justified in doing so, The folluw-
ing resolutions were lately passed at a
meeting of tnuose engaged in the business
    bn New England :—

“Whereas the present depression of the

gsheries of New England lias been lirgely

produced by importation grom the Britith and

Mrench Provinces, thereby cutting off the

upplying of markets by American fishermen,

    Lerefore.

solved, That areturn to the former policy

fthe United States Government in fostering

nd protecting these fisheries is imuediately

    Bemanded.

Resolved, That the existing tariff of fifty
ents per one hundred pounds on codfish, and
fone dollar per one hundred pounds upon
    mackerel is an insuificient protection.
Resolved. That a large increase of duty ur
bn foreign fish is indispensible to the cominu-
nee and maintenance of our fisheries,
Resolved, That the drawback 1),on foreign
alt offered by Congress as of sct of the theh-
ng bounties dy adequass compensation there-
    Mur.

    The Novascotian commenting upon
    these resolutions says :—-

“No more uncalled for and impudent de-
mand for protection was ever made. The
New Englanders are allowed the undeserved
privilege of fishing on our coasts, and now
hey desire to drive us from their markets.

    . * . * * .

If New Englanders are unable to compete
with us fairly in this branch of business, ler
them give it up. They are now. sheltered
Hehind duties almost proehibitory; they re-
weive a dvawback upon the sult they use,
while we are forced to depend upon our ows
unaided efforts. What nicre can they reason-
    lably desire?”

We feel that our contemporary is fully
justified in whet he saya, and hope that
this inexhaustible source of wealth in the

ceive that attention from our Government.
which its importance would justify them
    in bestowing upon it.

parts of Great Britain, we are led to be-
