Abstract

The Journal-Pioneer began publication on October 5, 1951, the result of the amalgamation of the Summerside Journal and the Pioneer. Prince County news was emphasized in the paper, with other news reporting being less extensive. Editorials were politically nonpartisan and often promoted the interests of Prince County. Fiction, recipes, sports, advertisements and occasional columns on agriculture, the local high school and the Royal Canadian Air Force all appeared in the Journal-Pioneer during the 1950s. During the 1960s, the amount of provincial reporting in the Journal-Pioneer increased. Editorials discussed P.E.I, issues including the ferry service, Summerside city politics, the amalgamation of Prince of Wales College and Saint Dunstan's University, and federal and provincial politics. A women's page appeared during this decade, while fiction disappeared. Columns on agriculture, advice, Charlottetown and health were all printed. Between 1970 and 1986 the Journal-Pioneer's editorials dealt with local issues progressively less frequently; comment on national and international events became the norm. The Journal-Pioneer is still being published today.

Frequency: Tri-weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, Oct. 5 1951 - Oct. 11 1957; Daily, Oct. 15 1957 to date.
