    BOY AND HOW HE SAVED MANY
    LIVES.
    In conversa Ion with a prominent

    physi mn the other day the subject of |
    railroad accidents and escapes came up. |
    “One of the most remarkable instances |
    of presence of mind of which | have}
    ever heard,” said he, “‘was related to me |
    by Colonel John D. Wicklitfe, not long |
    yo. It was on the Louisviile and |
    N. ishville Railroad near the Muldraugh’s |
    Hilltunnel. At that time the
    of running trains Was io a very e'emen
    tary state. The practice was to run}
    ’ neway at a time. In the}
    trains would be stal ted |
    vuisville and in the |
    evening they would be run back. They
    were preceed i by auother traio and al)
    a distance of about a mile a third one}
    They pulled out from the |
    and made as good}

    followed.
    depot ata iate hour

    time as possible when fairly on the}
    road. Everything went smoothly |
    enough till the tunnel was reached,

    when the firsttrain was halted by a
    ignal just before entering. Upon in-;{
    vestigation it was found that a freight |
    train had broken down in the passage. |

    “Every one who has been over the
    road knows how steep is the grade ot
    Muldraugh’s Hill. Toclimb it the en-
    ginecrs put on every ounce of steam
    and take off the br: ikes till th e friction
    is re lead toa minimum.
    is but a short distance from the tunnel
    anda deep curve in the track hides an
    approachingtraintillwichioa few hun-
    dred yards. Up thio, incline,but hidden
    by the curve,was heard the puffing of the
    third troip "The carseat. engine was
    laboring gallantly and drawing the long
    string of cars behind her as easily as a
    trotter the light sulky of his driver.
    The summit was reached and with a
    wild shriek of delight, the train sprang
    around the first curve and darted upon
    the ir-atie-work. The momentum gain-
    ed in the upward struggle carried it
    aeross with race-horse speed and the
    track quivered and stretched beneath
    its eager tread. The cold night air
    vibrated with tbe puffing of the engine
    and the hills echoed and re-echoed the
    shrieks of the whistle. The train was
    not two minutes’ distance from the se
    cond section when first heard. The
    horror-stricken passengers in front were
    caught in atrap. The rear train had
    been totally forgotten and it was now
    bearing down upon them, bringing death
    and torture nearer and nearer.

    “Atthatawful momenta newsboy,
    with a great bundle of papers, dashed
    like mad through the car to the rear.
    The men yielded an instant passage and
    he was but a moment in reaching the
    rear platform. How he manag-
    ed it no one knew, but he
    had whipped out a match and
    hada buodle of papers in flames
    just as the headlight of the advanciog
    engiae appeared around the curve.
    flis entire stock flamed up, and he
    waved and shouted, his face and form
    lit up as perhaps was Cuasabiaoca’s on
    that fatal dayat Trafalgar. The en-
    gineer saw him just in time. He
    reversed his engine and put on brakes
    so rapidly that his train simply bumped
    against the onein front. The pluck
    and presence of mind of the boy had
    saved scores of lives.

    ‘About five minutes after the pas-
    sengers realized that they were saved,
    a collection was taken up among the
    officers and the newsboy was made
    richer by $500. I wish that I could
    reeull his name, but itis doubtful if it
    will ever be known. — Louisville Courier-
    Journal.

    cap:
    Choice of Occupation.

    Parents often complain that their
    sons have been to school ail their lives,
    have no choice of oceupation, or that
    they choose to be accountants or clerks,
    instead of manufacturers or mechanics.
    These complaints are invariably unrea-
    sonable ; for how em one choose at all
    or wisely when he knows so little ?

    1 contident y eliove that the develop-
    ment of the manual elements in school
    will prevent those serious errors in the
    choice of a vocation which too often
    wreck the foadest hopes. It is not as-
    sumed that every boy who enters a
    manual training schvol is to be a me-
    chanic ; his training leaves him free.
    No pupils were ever more uaprejudiced,
    better prepared to look below the sur
    tace, less the victims ofa faise gentil-

    NEW IMPROVED PATENT EIGHT: -FLANGE FIRE-PROOF SAFE.

    Safe in the world, aud containing more improvements than ANY

    SAFE made, such as :

    ist. THE PATENT INSIDE BOLT WOR K, which is placiag the bolt work with the
    whole of the filling (six inches) between it and the outside, that is, as far from the tire and
    thief as if can be.

    2ad. THE PATENT HINGED CAP—the back plate of ‘the door being on hinges,
    enabling the owner, by turning a thumbscrew, to have eesy access to the lock and boit-
    work. He can thus easily change the Ieck, clean, oil, and keep the bolt-work in good order,

    3rd. IRON INSIDE LINING, stronger than wood, and which retains the moisture in
    the filling for an indefinite time. Wood is thicker and weaker, and after a few years absorbs
    the moisture and ‘‘requires filling over ag ain,

    4th, FOUR-WHEEL COMBINATION LOOKS, the simplest, strongest, most efficient
    and easiest to change of any in use.

    5th. SOLID ANGLE IRON FRONTS, BACKS AND CORNERS, which prevents
    warping or injary to safe from falling, or falling walls or timbers.

    6th, LIGHT FLANGES—the most imp rtant improvement ever made in fire-proof
    safes, providing e'ght laps, thus preventing the passage ot heat, it having to psss over twelve
    inches, no injury arises from this source, as in other safes containing one, two or three flanges.

    THESE SAFES have stood the test of years, and the gre atest fires on this continent,
