SU MMER IDE JOU RN AL, THU RSDAY, MAY 30, is :

We “peresive that the Government Kew Advertisements this Bay

have decided to run a sailing packet be-
    tween Cascumpee and Charlottctown,

We presume that she will call at Sum- |

merside when the weather permits. “This
is one step in advance. We hope that
the next step will be to place a steamer
of light dranght on the waters of Rich-
mond Bay. By means of such a steamer,
anda shortline of railroad ora canal across
the Peninsula, the good people of Tig-
nish, Alberton and Malpeque could have

    daily communication with Summerside, |

during the whole season of navigation,

The ** Heather Belle” is elso to run
    between Souris, Georgetown and Char-
lottctown. The inhabitants of the East-
ern end of the Island will find this a very
great convenience. ‘To add to our means

of intercommunication by steamers is the |
most feasible and infinitely the cheapest |

way of bringing distant parts of the
Island into close and familiar relation
    with cach other,

WE are glad to learn that the Hon.
James Yeo has so far recovered as to be
    able to g9 out again,

We have received a copy of a ncat
little musie book culled the ** Provincial
    Melodist,’—a very nice collection of
hymns and tunes, We think it should
be in every home circle and Sunday
    School.

    Gopry's Lady's s Book for June has
‘come to hand. The stcel plate called
«©The Farm Yard,” is a picture that will
be understood by every child of the coun-
try. ‘The fashion plate is very gay this
month. ‘There are some nice patterns of
fancy work, and the latest styles of wear-
ing the hair which out-tops eventhe water-
    falls, The reading matter is, as usual, |;
    interesting.

Oars are in good demand at 2s 5 Gd per
bushel, potatoes at 2s 1d, oatmeal at 18s
per hundred, eggs at 8d per dozen, butter
in poor demand ut Id per pound,

We oliserve by th Teele omer that
atthe recent examination of the Sackyille
Academy, the degree of B. A. was conferred

-on Mr, ‘Vhomas Rogers, of Bedeque, in this

Island. Mr. Rogers has, we learn, now com-
peleted his studies, and intends entering the
Wesleyan Ministry. We wish him every
success, ind trust that he may be * wise to
Win souls” The degree of N. L. A. was
confe rred upon Miss Mellish, of this Island.

    Copenhagen, May 26,

The Dutch Government, it is said, has in-
formed foreign powers that the Prussian Gov-
ernment continues to disregard the obliga-
tions of the ‘Treaty of 1865, in regard to
    Schleswig.

    London, May 27.

The question whether the death sentences
of the Fenian prisoners shall be carried out
    or not engrosses public attention,

The press of England and Ireland generally
urge that the sentenees be commuted to im-
    prisonment for lite.

A despatch from Dublin states that the jury
have brought in a verdict of guilly against
the prisoner O'Brien, but coupled with a re-
    commendation to merey.

It is said that the American minister, Mr.
Adams, will interpose his good offizes to save
    McClure from the seafiold.

    London, May 27, even.

It is authoritatively announced that. the
Government has commuted the capital sen-
tences of the Fenian prisoners to imprison-
    ment for life.

The Danish Government has addressed a
circular note to its representatives at the
Courts of the Eurepean powers, denying the
truth of the report which hud gained some
credit that the Prussian Government had
entered into negotiations with the cabinet of
Copenhagen, with a view to bring about the
    retrocession of Schleswig to Denmark,

with Maximilian and his army, is officially
    announced,

    Washington, May 28.

The news of the capture of Queretaro, Em-
peror Maximilian and several of his officers
by Juarez creates considerable excitement in
this city, particularly the report that Juarez
has ordered the captives to he shot. Al-
though Jnarez did not give positive assurance
tothe United States messenger that Maximil-
ian and his officers should not be shot, it is
believed in official circles thet he will regard
the wishes of the United States authorities in
this matter and spare the lives of his prison-
    ere.
