Prince Edward Island has a rich and compelling political history. Islanders have demonstrated some of the highest voter turnout rates in the country since the province joined Confederation in 1873.

If it's true to say that Islanders love exercising their democratic rights, it also a fact that they love to look good in the process. The Guardian issue of February 7, 1891 contains a unique advertising ploy that combines the imperative of democratic participation with that of affordable fashion.

The same issues reveal the machinations of the political party system. The Guardian played a crucial role in this system by communicating key party nominating information to both party members and the wider Island population.

Advertisements such as this one for Nasal Balm were common in the Guardian from its earliest days. This advertisement appeared on March 12, 1891 alongside Mr. G. D. Balderston's advertisement to sell his farm.

The Guardian relied heavily on the advertising revenue provided by local merchants. The December 24, 1890 issue contains an advertisement for the Apothecarie Hall. Proprietor George E. Hughes's advertisement provides an example of the health and  animal-care goods offered by the drug-store equivalent of the late Victorian era.
